A day of giving back is a day well spent! On Wednesday, May 9, our team participated in the United Way Day of Caring in Harrisonburg for the second year in a row. This year, we partnered with Building Goodness Foundation to work on the exterior of the Plains Area Daycare Center in Broadway, VA. This daycare provides childcare to lower income families.

“It’s important to give back because we’re all members of the community,” said Brian Nixon, one of our drafting technicians who spent the day helping out. “Neighbors should look out for neighbors and help whenever help is needed.”

In addition to putting up siding at the daycare, volunteers also mulched, installed shutters, and enclosed an existing shelter for use as an activity center.

“I believe everyone deserves to live, work, and play in a building they feel safe in,” said Brian Koerner, co-founder. “That’s why I became a structural engineer in the first place and that’s why I continue to give back to projects like this in the community.”

We enjoyed working alongside Jim DeLucas and the Nielsen Builders Team, Kevin Gabel and the Lantz Construction Team, and Greg St. Ours on this project. It was a great way to partner with other organizations and give back to the community we call home. As structural engineers, no two days are ever alike, but we’ll certainly be participating in the Day of Caring again!
